Reed y Victor son dos estudiantes de física que pretenden capturar la energía de un cometa con
un artefacto de diseño propio. La noche del experimento algo va mal, Reed sugiere abandonar el edificio,
pero Victor se niega, y sólo la intervención de Ben Grimm, un amigo de Reed, salvará a éste de una muerte
similar a la que sufre Victor. Años más tarde, Reed, Ben y los hermanos Storm realizan un vuelo espacial
para experimentar fuera de la atmósfera. Pero la aparición del Joyero (villano original de la película)
provoca que el cohete estalle en pedazos en pleno espacio ante la radiación. Los restos del cohete se
estrellan en la Tierra y sus ilesos tripulantes descubren que han adquirido poderes sobrehumanos.
